Overview
Graham Beck’s Robertson cellar and farm are situated in the Breederiver Valley bordering the semi-arid Little Karoo region. The warm climate in combination with mineral and fossil rich soils gives this area a distinct character which spills into its quality wines and Cap Classique bubblies. The region’s limestone rich soils are especially suited to the planting of Chardonnay.
Out of 169 ha, 39% is planted under Chardonnay, 27% under Shiraz, 12% under Pinot Noir and 8% is under Cabernet Sauvignon. A small percentage is made-up of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Muscat de Alexandrie, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Ruby Cabernet and Pinotage.
Because of the unique, dry, warm climate, neutron probes are used to monitor moisture levels to determine soil moisture content in terms of irrigation strategy, ensuring correct practices required for small berries with optimum flavour levels.
These carefully trained vineyards are in stark contrast to their indigenous surroundings. Here the countryside is covered with the indigenous fynbos and inhabited by a range of wild animals, including buck, zebra, ostrich, various reptiles and rare African birds.
